What motorcycle brake products does Sportsbike sell? +

How do I know which brake parts fit my motorcycle? +

Use the Sportsbike Bike Finder and the fitment information on the individual product page to confirm compatibility with your motorcycle make, model and year.

Brake compatibility can also depend on the exact caliper, master cylinder, disc diameter, mounting arrangement, brake line configuration and other components already fitted to the motorcycle.

Can I mix brake calipers, master cylinders, discs and pads from different systems? +

Not automatically. Braking components must be compatible with the complete braking system, not simply capable of being physically mounted to the motorcycle.

Master cylinder bore size, caliper piston area, disc diameter and thickness, pad shape, mounting dimensions, brake line configuration and hydraulic requirements can all affect whether components are suitable to be used together.

If you are changing the original braking configuration, the complete combination should be checked by a suitably qualified motorcycle mechanic.

How do I choose the correct brake pads? +

Brake pads must first match the exact caliper and pad shape required for the motorcycle.

Different pad compounds can then provide different characteristics for road, performance, racing or wet-weather use, including differences in initial bite, operating temperature, wear and braking feel.

Always use a pad specification suitable for the motorcycle, braking system and intended use.

How do I know if a brake disc is compatible with my motorcycle? +

Brake disc compatibility depends on more than overall diameter.

Mounting pattern, centre bore, offset, thickness, braking track dimensions, caliper position and ABS or speed-sensor arrangements can all be relevant.

Use the product fitment information for the exact motorcycle and have the installation checked by a suitably qualified motorcycle mechanic.

What does master cylinder bore size mean? +

The bore size is the internal diameter of the master cylinder piston. It affects the amount of hydraulic fluid displaced and therefore influences lever travel, braking feel and the hydraulic relationship between the master cylinder and calipers.

A larger or smaller bore is not automatically an upgrade. The master cylinder must be correctly matched to the braking system.

Do I need to bleed the brake system after installing new pads or brake lines? +

Replacing brake pads alone does not normally require the hydraulic system to be opened. However, the complete braking system still needs to be inspected and checked before the motorcycle is returned to service.

Replacing brake lines, master cylinders, calipers or other hydraulic components normally requires the braking system to be correctly filled and bled because the hydraulic circuit has been opened.

Air in a hydraulic brake system can seriously reduce braking performance. Brake bleeding, hydraulic work and final brake-system checks should be carried out by a suitably qualified motorcycle mechanic in accordance with the motorcycle and component manufacturer's procedures.

What is the break-in period for new brake pads or discs? +

New brake pads and discs may require a bedding-in or break-in procedure before they achieve their intended braking performance.

The required procedure and distance vary between manufacturers, pad compounds, disc materials and applications, so there is no single break-in period that applies to every motorcycle brake product.

Follow the bedding-in instructions supplied by the brake manufacturer and the advice of the qualified motorcycle mechanic carrying out the installation. Braking performance may differ during the bedding-in period.

What brake fluid should I use? +

Use only the brake-fluid specification approved for the motorcycle and the braking components being used.

Different brake-fluid specifications are not automatically interchangeable, and using the wrong fluid can damage seals or affect braking-system operation.

The correct specification should be confirmed from the motorcycle and component manufacturer's technical information.

When should motorcycle brake pads or discs be replaced? +

Brake pads and discs are wear components and must remain within the manufacturer's specified service limits.

Replacement may be required because of wear, minimum thickness, damage, contamination, distortion or other deterioration.

A suitably qualified motorcycle mechanic should inspect the braking system and determine whether components remain safe and serviceable.

Can I install or service motorcycle brakes myself? +

Sportsbike recommends that all motorcycle brake installation, servicing, modification and hydraulic work is carried out by a suitably qualified motorcycle mechanic.

Motorcycle brakes are safety-critical systems. Correct installation can involve component compatibility, torque settings, hydraulic bleeding, brake-fluid specification, caliper alignment, disc condition, pad installation, lever adjustment and verification of correct operation.

Incorrect installation, servicing or adjustment can result in reduced braking performance, component failure, motorcycle damage, serious injury or other loss.

Can changing motorcycle brakes affect roadworthy or compliance requirements? +

It can. Changes to braking components or the original braking configuration may be subject to vehicle standards, modification, certification or inspection requirements.

Requirements can vary between Australian states and territories. Sportsbike cannot certify that a particular brake modification will satisfy roadworthy, registration or compliance requirements.

Where compliance is important, check the requirements with the relevant road authority, an appropriately licensed vehicle examiner or another suitably qualified professional before modifying the braking system.
