STM Italy FAQs +
What is STM Italy? +

STM Italy is an Italian specialist manufacturer best known for high-performance motorcycle slipper clutches, dry-clutch systems, clutch conversion kits and precision-machined motorcycle components.

STM's clutch technology has been developed through extensive motorsport use and is available for road, racing, off-road and supermoto motorcycles.

Why should I choose STM Italy? +

STM Italy is a strong choice for riders looking for specialist clutch technology developed specifically for high-performance motorcycles.

The range includes slipper clutches, dry-clutch systems, conversion kits and service components for road, race and off-road applications, with a strong focus on clutch control and back-torque management.

What does an STM slipper clutch do? +

A slipper clutch is designed to reduce excessive engine braking during aggressive downshifts. It allows controlled clutch slip when back-torque becomes high, helping reduce rear-wheel hopping, locking or instability.

This can improve motorcycle stability under braking and during corner entry, particularly during fast road or track riding.

Does STM only make clutches for Ducati motorcycles? +

No. Ducati is a major part of the STM range, but STM also produces clutch systems and components for many other motorcycle manufacturers.

Current STM applications include brands such as Aprilia, BMW, Honda, Kawasaki, KTM, Husqvarna, Suzuki, Triumph, Yamaha, MV Agusta, CFMOTO and others.

What is the difference between STM Original, EVO 90MM, EVO SBK and EVO-GP clutches? +

STM offers several clutch configurations with different designs, spring systems and performance characteristics.

Original-style STM systems generally retain a more traditional clutch configuration, while EVO 90MM, EVO SBK and EVO-GP systems represent increasingly performance-focused designs using different diaphragm spring arrangements, dimensions and internal components.

The available versions vary by motorcycle. Always check the exact STM product code and specification rather than assuming the different clutch families are interchangeable.

What is the difference between a 40-tooth and 48-tooth STM clutch? +

Some STM dry-clutch systems are available in different basket and clutch plate configurations, commonly identified as 40-tooth or 48-tooth systems.

The clutch basket, plate pack and related components need to be compatible with each other. A 40-tooth plate pack should not automatically be assumed to work with a 48-tooth basket, or vice versa.

If you are replacing or upgrading part of an existing STM system, contact Sportsbike with the STM part numbers before ordering.

Can STM convert my motorcycle from a wet clutch to a dry clutch? +

For selected motorcycles, yes. STM produces complete dry-clutch conversion systems for a number of applications, including selected Ducati and BMW motorcycles.

Depending on the application, a conversion can require a new clutch assembly, clutch housing or cover, basket, plates, hydraulic components, spacers and other model-specific parts.

These conversions are technically involved and Sportsbike recommends professional installation.

What is the STM CLG clutch? +

CLG is STM's newer clutch platform developed for demanding off-road and motocross applications.

STM designed the CLG system with a focus on controlled clutch behaviour, reduced rotating mass, improved lubrication, durability and consistent performance under severe racing conditions.

CLG applications are motorcycle-specific, so always confirm the exact model and year before ordering.

What do the primary and secondary springs do in an STM slipper clutch? +

STM slipper clutches can use separate spring systems to control normal clutch engagement and the response of the slipper mechanism under back-torque.

Spring specification affects how the clutch behaves, including its engagement characteristics and the amount of slipper action during downshifts.

Only use the spring specifications recommended by STM for the exact clutch and motorcycle application.

Can I change STM clutch springs to adjust the slipper action? +

Selected STM slipper clutches can be tuned using different approved spring configurations. Changing spring specification can alter clutch engagement and back-torque behaviour.

Spring changes should not be made at random. Use only STM-approved components and setup information for the exact clutch and motorcycle.

Does an STM clutch reuse the original clutch plates? +

This depends on the STM clutch kit. Some systems are designed to reuse certain original clutch components, while others require an STM-specific plate pack, basket, additional steel plate or other dedicated parts.

Always check the individual product specification and installation instructions for the exact STM kit.

How do I find the correct STM clutch for my motorcycle? +

Use the Sportsbike fitment information to match the STM product to your exact motorcycle make, model and year.

With STM clutches it is also important to confirm the clutch type, basket configuration, plate pack and any required spacers or conversion components.

If you are unsure, contact Sportsbike with your motorcycle details and the STM part number before ordering.

Are installation instructions available for STM clutches? +

STM publishes installation instructions for many clutch systems, conversion kits and related components.

Always use the instructions for the exact STM product code, as stack height, component orientation, springs, spacers and torque specifications can vary.

Can I install an STM clutch myself? +

STM clutch installation can involve clutch stack height, spring selection, component orientation, spacers, torque settings and other model-specific requirements. Dry-clutch conversion kits can be considerably more involved.

Damage or faults caused by incorrect installation, improper fitting, modification or installation errors may not be covered under warranty. Sportsbike recommends installation by a suitably qualified or experienced motorcycle technician.

Can I buy replacement parts for an STM clutch? +

Yes. STM lists replacement and service components for many of its clutch systems, and technical documentation identifies individual components by STM part number.

If you need a replacement spring, basket, hub, plate, bearing or other clutch component, contact Sportsbike with the STM clutch code and required part.

What colours are available for STM clutch systems? +

Colour options depend on the STM product. Selected clutch systems, conversion kits and covers are available in different finishes and colour combinations.

Check the individual product listing for the options available for the exact system.

How long will my STM Italy order take to arrive? +

Some STM products may be available from stock, while specialist clutch systems, dry-clutch conversion kits and particular configurations may need to be supplied from Italy.

As a general guide, please allow approximately 1–3 weeks for delivery. Lead times can vary depending on the product, configuration and current manufacturer availability.

What warranty applies to STM Italy products? +

Manufacturer warranty coverage depends on the STM product and the applicable STM warranty and sales conditions. Products must be correctly installed, maintained and used within the manufacturer's specified operating requirements.

For STM products purchased from Sportsbike in Australia, any manufacturer's warranty operates in addition to rights and remedies that may apply under Australian Consumer Law.
