Handlebars & Controls

Your hands make thousands of small inputs every ride. Lever reach, throttle action, grip position and switch placement all contribute to how natural and precise the motorcycle feels. Set up the cockpit around the way you ride, replace damaged parts or upgrade the controls you use every time you get on the bike. Search by motorcycle above or browse the control categories below.

Handlebars & Controls FAQs +
What motorcycle handlebar and control products does Sportsbike sell? +

Sportsbike offers a wide range of motorcycle handlebar and control components, including clip-ons, handlebars, brake and clutch levers, lever guards, throttle controls, reservoirs, bar-end weights, bar-end accessories, switches and related control components.

Use the Bike Finder above and the Shop by Type options to narrow the range to products suitable for your motorcycle.

How do I know which handlebars or controls fit my motorcycle? +

Use the Sportsbike Bike Finder and the fitment information on the individual product page to confirm compatibility with your motorcycle make, model and year.

Compatibility can also depend on fork diameter, original controls, master-cylinder mounts, throttle system, switchgear, bar-end threads, cable and hose length and other components already fitted to the motorcycle.

If you are unsure, email Sportsbike or call +61 466 869 364 with your motorcycle make, exact model, model year, the product you are considering and a brief explanation of what you need help with.

Do clip-ons fit all bikes, or are they model-specific? +

Clip-ons are not automatically universal. Some are designed for a specific motorcycle, while others are supplied for a particular fork diameter or mounting arrangement.

Correct fitment can depend on fork diameter, available clamping area, handlebar tube diameter, control mounting, tank and fairing clearance, steering lock, cable and hose routing and the position of the original switchgear.

Even where the clamp diameter is correct, clearance and control positioning must still be checked for the complete steering range.

What is the difference between a lever and a lever guard? +

A lever is the rider-operated control used to actuate the front brake or clutch.

A lever guard is a separate protective component positioned around or in front of the lever. It is designed to help reduce the chance of accidental lever activation or contact, particularly during close riding or competition use.

A lever guard does not replace the brake or clutch lever, and compatibility with the handlebar, bar end and existing controls must still be checked.

Will adjustable levers fit my stock mounts? +

Only if the lever is specifically designed for the original master cylinder or clutch perch fitted to your motorcycle.

Adjustable does not mean universal. The pivot design, mounting dimensions, actuator position, brake-light or clutch switch operation and master-cylinder or clutch-perch design must all be compatible.

Always confirm the exact motorcycle application and lever fitment before ordering.

What is a brake or clutch fluid reservoir, and do I need to replace mine? +

A reservoir stores the hydraulic fluid used by a brake or hydraulic clutch system and supplies fluid to the master cylinder as the system operates.

The original reservoir normally does not need to be replaced simply because another control component is being changed, unless the replacement system requires a different reservoir or the original component is damaged, deteriorated or unsuitable for the new configuration.

Reservoir capacity, hose connection, mounting position, fluid compatibility and the requirements of the master cylinder must all be considered.

Do bar-end weights or bar-end parts affect handling? +

They can affect the way the motorcycle feels through the handlebars. Original bar-end weights are often used to help manage handlebar vibration, and changing their mass can alter the amount or frequency of vibration felt by the rider.

Bar-end mirrors, lever guards, weights and other accessories can also change the overall width and mass at the end of the handlebar.

Any replacement bar-end component must be securely mounted and compatible with the handlebar, internal thread or expansion system being used.

Can I fit aftermarket throttle controls to a bike with electronic throttle (ride-by-wire)? +

Only where the aftermarket throttle component is specifically compatible with the motorcycle's electronic throttle system.

A ride-by-wire motorcycle uses electronic sensors and control systems rather than a conventional mechanical throttle cable alone. Throttle tube design, sensor interface, switchgear, wiring, electronic calibration and safety functions can therefore be motorcycle-specific.

A conventional cable-operated throttle component should not be assumed to work with a ride-by-wire motorcycle.

If you are unsure whether a throttle component is suitable, email Sportsbike or call +61 466 869 364 with your motorcycle details and the product you are considering before ordering.

Can changing clip-ons or handlebars affect cable, hose and control operation? +

Yes. Changing handlebar height, width, angle or position can alter the routing and available length of throttle cables, clutch cables, brake hoses, hydraulic clutch lines, wiring and switchgear.

Controls must operate freely throughout the complete steering range without cables, hoses or wiring becoming tight, trapped, kinked or stretched.

The handlebars and controls must also maintain adequate clearance from the fuel tank, fairings, windscreen and other motorcycle components at full steering lock.

Who should install motorcycle handlebars and control components? +

Sportsbike recommends that motorcycle handlebars, rider controls, throttle components and brake or clutch controls are installed and checked by a suitably qualified motorcycle mechanic.

These components can directly affect steering, throttle operation, braking and clutch control. Correct installation can involve mounting position, torque settings, control adjustment, cable and hose routing, switch operation, clearances and verification of unrestricted movement throughout the complete steering range.

Electronic throttle systems can also require motorcycle-specific procedures, checks or calibration.

Product descriptions and fitment information supplied by Sportsbike identify products and applications. They are not a representation that a customer is qualified, authorised or legally permitted to perform installation or modification work.

Incorrect installation or adjustment can cause unintended throttle operation, restricted steering, brake or clutch malfunction, motorcycle damage, loss of control, injury or other loss.
