Exhausts

An exhaust does far more than make a motorcycle louder. The right system can reduce weight, change power delivery, manage heat and completely alter the sound and visual character of the bike. Sportsbike specialises in premium exhaust manufacturers including systems developed for road use, homologated applications and competition. Use the Bike Finder above to see systems designed for your motorcycle, or explore slip-ons, full systems, headers and exhaust components below.

Exhaust FAQs +
What motorcycle exhaust products does Sportsbike sell? +

Sportsbike offers a large range of motorcycle exhaust products from leading international manufacturers, including slip-on exhausts, full exhaust systems, headers, link pipes, decat pipes, catalytic converters, universal exhausts and exhaust accessories.

Use the Bike Finder above and the Shop by Type options to narrow the range to products suitable for your motorcycle and the type of exhaust component you are looking for.

Why should I fit an aftermarket exhaust to my motorcycle? +

Riders fit aftermarket exhausts for a range of reasons, including reducing weight, changing the sound and appearance of the motorcycle, improving exhaust flow and, on some systems, supporting performance improvements.

The result depends on the motorcycle and the type of exhaust being fitted. A slip-on system may mainly change sound, weight and styling, while a full exhaust system can make a larger change to exhaust flow and may offer greater performance potential when correctly matched to the motorcycle.

Some exhaust changes may also require ECU tuning or other setup changes to achieve the intended result. Always check the manufacturer's recommendations for the exact motorcycle and exhaust system.

How do I know which exhaust fits my motorcycle? +

Use the Sportsbike Bike Finder and the fitment information on the individual product page to confirm compatibility with your motorcycle make, model and year.

Exhaust fitment can also depend on the exact motorcycle version, existing exhaust components and other modifications.

If you are unsure, email Sportsbike or call +61 466 869 364 with your motorcycle make, exact model, model year, the exhaust you are considering and a brief explanation of what you need help with.

What is the difference between a slip-on exhaust and a full exhaust system? +

A slip-on exhaust generally replaces the original muffler or silencer while retaining most of the motorcycle's existing exhaust system.

A full exhaust system replaces substantially more of the original system and can include headers, collectors, link pipes and silencers depending on the particular product.

The exact components included vary between manufacturers and applications, so always check the individual product description before ordering.

What are headers, link pipes and decat pipes? +

Headers are the exhaust pipes that connect directly to the engine and form the front section of the exhaust system.

Link pipes connect different sections of the exhaust, commonly joining a silencer to the original or aftermarket exhaust system.

Decat pipes are designed to replace or bypass a catalytic converter where the particular exhaust configuration allows it.

These components are application-specific unless clearly identified as universal. Changing them can affect noise, emissions, exhaust flow, fuelling and road-use compliance.

Will my motorcycle need ECU tuning after fitting an exhaust? +

It depends on the motorcycle and the exhaust configuration.

Some slip-on exhausts are designed to operate with the standard ECU calibration, while full systems, decat systems or other significant changes to exhaust flow may require ECU adjustment, remapping or another fuelling solution.

Always follow the exhaust manufacturer's recommendations for the exact motorcycle and system being installed.

What do homologated, catalyst and dB killer mean? +

Homologated means the exhaust has been tested and approved to meet specified requirements, such as noise and emissions limits, when fitted to the particular motorcycle and used in the approved configuration.

The approval normally applies only while the exhaust remains in that approved configuration. Removing a catalyst, dB killer or another component required as part of the approved system can affect or invalidate that approval.

A catalyst is part of the exhaust's emissions-control system. It helps convert harmful gases produced by the engine into less harmful emissions before they leave the exhaust.

A dB killer, sometimes called a noise insert or baffle, is designed to reduce exhaust noise. On some homologated systems it forms part of the approved exhaust configuration and must remain fitted for that approval to apply.

European or overseas homologation does not automatically mean an exhaust is approved for road use in Australia.

Is a homologated exhaust automatically road legal in Australia? +

No. An exhaust being homologated or approved under a European or other overseas system does not automatically mean that it complies with Australian road-use requirements.

Noise, emissions and vehicle modification requirements can apply in Australia, including requirements that vary between states and territories.

The exact exhaust configuration also matters. Removing a catalyst, dB killer or other component that formed part of an approved system can change its noise or emissions performance and may affect road-use compliance.

Always check the requirements applicable to your motorcycle and location before making changes where road legality is important.

Will changing my exhaust affect a roadworthy or compliance inspection? +

It can. An aftermarket exhaust may affect roadworthiness or vehicle compliance if it changes the motorcycle's noise level, emissions equipment or other requirements that apply to the vehicle.

Removing or bypassing a catalytic converter, removing a required dB killer, fitting a racing-only exhaust or otherwise changing an approved exhaust configuration may affect whether the motorcycle complies with applicable road-use requirements.

Requirements vary between Australian states and territories, and Sportsbike cannot certify that a particular exhaust modification will pass a roadworthy or compliance inspection.

If registration, roadworthy or inspection compliance is important for your purchase, check the applicable requirements with your relevant road authority or a suitably licensed vehicle examiner before modifying the exhaust.

What does “racing use only” mean on an exhaust? +

Racing-use exhaust products are designed primarily for competition, closed-course or track applications and may not meet the requirements for use on public roads.

This can include full racing systems, decat components and other exhaust configurations intended specifically for competition or performance use.

What should I check before buying a universal exhaust? +

Universal means the exhaust is not designed exclusively for one motorcycle model. It does not mean that it is guaranteed to fit every motorcycle.

Check the inlet diameter, available mounting points, overall dimensions, exhaust position, required brackets or adapters and clearance around the motorcycle before ordering.

If you need help checking a universal exhaust, email Sportsbike or call +61 466 869 364.

Who should install a motorcycle exhaust? +

Sportsbike recommends professional installation of motorcycle exhaust components by a suitably qualified person for the work being performed.

Exhaust systems must be installed correctly and in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions. Incorrect assembly, alignment, sealing, clearances or tightening can result in exhaust leaks, component damage, motorcycle damage or other problems.

Product descriptions and fitment information identify compatible products and applications. They are not a representation that a particular customer is qualified, authorised or legally permitted to carry out the installation.
